Pool pumps work hard in a Highveld summer, outdoors, next to water. That makes them one of the most common causes of tripping power and electrical call-outs. Here's how to narrow the problem down safely.
Safety first
Water and electricity are a dangerous mix. Switch the pump off at the DB board before touching anything, and don't open the pump's electrical cover or the timer box yourself. Never work on it with wet hands or while standing in water.
Common symptoms and causes
| Symptom | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Pump doesn't run at the set times | Timer fault, wrong setting after a power cut, or timer pins out of place |
| Pump hums but doesn't start | Failed start capacitor or a seized motor (common after the pump stood unused in winter) |
| Earth leakage trips when the pump starts | Moisture in the motor, cable or connection box, or a failing motor |
| Pump starts, then stops after a while | Motor overheating: blocked impeller, dirty filter, or poor ventilation around the pump |
| Breaker trips immediately | Short circuit in the motor or cable |
| Pump runs but water barely moves | Not electrical: blocked basket, dirty filter, air leak or low water level |
What you can safely check
- The DB board: has the pool circuit breaker or the earth leakage tripped? See why the earth leakage keeps tripping.
- The timer: reset the time after load-shedding or an outage, and check the on/off pins or settings.
- The pump basket and filter: a blocked basket makes the motor strain and overheat.
- Water around the pump: look for leaks, a flooded pump pit, or the pump standing in water after rain.
If the pump trips the power again as soon as you switch it back on, leave it off and call someone.
Electrician or pool technician?
- Pool technician: motor, capacitor, seals, impeller, filter and plumbing.
- Electrician: the supply to the pump, a circuit that keeps tripping, a damaged cable, a wet connection box, or adding a proper outdoor isolator. Outdoor electrical work should comply with SANS 10142-1, and any new installation needs a certificate of compliance. See electrical CoC in Benoni.
